breaking news...

the apple i'm eating simply does not taste as good as it looked.

for shame!

it's been a week since i last wrote. i apologize to any of you who care. i'm am truly sorry and would like to make amends by showing you this:

just look at that thing! i mean, what is it trying to do to me? to us?! kill us with cuteness? come on! it's just sitting there in the green, green grass...probably waiting to hoppity hop its way into a leetle rabbit hole! you'll probably see its poofy cotton-tail as it disappears down the hole and then, it'll like, turn itself around in the rabbit hole and poke it's head out real cute like and say, "sorry lauren hasn't written in so long."

it's tough, i feel like there's a lot of sameness in my schedule these days, so i tend to feel a bit uninspired when it comes to my wee blog. if anyone has any suggestions, i am always open to them.

i hope everyone's memorial day was memorable. for those of you in our fair city of chicago, you already know that it was a toasty weekend. 92 or so degrees on saturday. wowser. it's time to haul the ol' AC unit up from the basement...

my weekend included one top-notch play, two yummy barbeques, three very hot performances, and four lovely bike rides. not a bad holiday weekend all in all.

the best thing in the entire world

is this website:

the celebrity face recognizer!

i've been on this website all morning, trying out various photos of various people and i've come to the conclusion that it is awesome.

apparently my face is closest to some british pop singer's and not far off from hilary duff (ew.) and angelina jolie (hmmm)...

this is the best ever...i can't even handle it!

i mean, where else can my friend ed's face be likened to that of legendary r & b diva, chaka khan?!

i urge you to try this out and post your results as comments on this here post. bonus points if it's a historical figure!

can you hear me now?!

softball was rained out on monday.

yesterday i got rained ON while riding my bike home. later we had a vicious hailstorm.

this morning i'm going to see a performance of redmoon's dramagirls, an amazing mentorship program i participated in last year. i couldn't do it this year due to my crazy schedule and i'm sad that i missed it. hopefully i'll be able to join them next time.

my "little sister" last year was diana, a quiet, sweet fourth-grader who i hear is totally finding her own voice. at a height of 3'5", she was quite recognizable last year as the tiniest dramagirl. as the shortest person in my school from kindergarten until junior high, i know from experience that smaller people can be overlooked. my simple advice to her was, "make yourself as big and as loud as you can." i know she's been working hard on that this year and i can't wait to see her.

i've gotten better at getting bigger and i'm still working on the loud part; finding the balance between the two is the tough bit.

making contact.

tonight, at 5:20 in the pm, i will play in my second theatre league softball game for the gift theatre. last monday, i spent the whole day worrying about my upcoming "performance." i had picked up neither ball (let alone a soft one) nor bat since high school gym class. in honor of this event, i wore my actual gym shirt from high school. i love this shirt. it's gray and soft and full of bulldog pride. i never cared much for the matching shorts though, those went by the wayside long ago. this shirt is the only good thing that ever came out of gym class.

i think i've blocked out most of the memories from that class. however, i do remember getting in minor trouble for a little scheme i hatched with my classmates during the "volleyball unit." the people on my "team" and i decided that it would be mutually beneficial for us to "accidentally" skip my serve each time my rotation came around. so instead of me taking a turn and potentially/probably ruining any chance of us winning, we'd let someone else serve the ball for me. it was the perfect crime...until we got caught. we didn't get in that much trouble, but i do remember getting scolded by our boozy, red-faced gym teacher.

so last monday, despite all of my nervousness, i actually hit the ball the very first time i was at bat. i didn't make it to first base, but i hit that ball and i felt proud. our team played a good game. we lost, of course, but not by a ton. b said that we didn't suck that badly at all! so, to celebrate our moderate loss, we drank beers.

tonight, we play again.

it's raining, it's pouring
the lauren is boring.
she went to bed,
all tired and unfed
and didn't wanna get up in the morning.

desert rose

almost all of the seeds have sprouted! hurrah! the most interesting one is the zucchini. a very thick stem...it looks like a miniature spoon bent in half...but green. it will look different by the time i get home today.

rode my bike to work twice this week...and even to the show last night (which is somewhat of a long ride)! during my ride, i was thinking of my very first bicycle. it looked like this:

a huffy "desert rose."

now, my parents are very big on surprises and birthdays were no exception. every birthday morning, our gifts seemed to materialize in the living room. my sister and i would find the hallway lined with innumerable strands of spiraling, colored crepe paper. the bike birthday was no exception. lavender was the central color choice of this particular birthday, which perfectly matched the color of my huffy "desert rose." a lavender banana-seat bike with a big lavender bow.

isn't it mesmeric?!

everything is green...

...because it has been raining for three days. i've tried to ride my bike, i really have, but the world has been conspiring against me. the world gave me a nasty cold and made it rain outside for three whole days. tomorrow, bike? tomorrow?

i am at work. i am watching the wind blow the huge, newly green maple tree back and forth. it is overcast, but kind of lovely right now...man, i'd like to try out some new adjectives...i seem to use the same few words over and over.

and here they are:

beautiful
lovely
amazing

here are some i'd like to get into circulation:

captivating
handsome
resplendent

and here are some words i will save for a different rainy day:

ambrosial
pulchritudinous
mesmeric

mesmeric! wow. that's a good one. i'd like to be described as mesmeric. i suppose i should start being more mesmeric then, huh? i'll see what i can do...

p.s. the basil has sprouted!
